Play For Purpose is a not-for-profit raffle helping hundreds of great Australian causes supercharge their fundraising. As part of its support of community organisations, The Lott provides resources and financial support to every Play For Purpose raffle.

JDRF has been involved in every major breakthrough in type 1 diabetes (T1D) care during the past 45 years, with its core mission to improve lives and defeat this chronic disease.

T1D is an autoimmune disease which destroys the body’s ability to process sugar by attacking the beta cells in the pancreas that produce the hormone insulin. Without insulin, sugar builds up in the bloodstream in life-threatening amounts.

Today, there are more than 127,000 Australians living with T1D and facing the physical, emotional and financial impacts which comes with living with this autoimmune disease.

However, this could be a thing of the past as JDRF works towards achieving its mission of creating a world where T1D doesn’t exist.

JDRF Australia CEO and Managing Director, Mike Wilson, said JDRF was a leading supporter of T1D research globally, having invested $191 million in Australia alone since 1982.

“Every day we fight to ensure that life with T1D is better, safer and easier than the day before,” he said.

“Today, seven Australians will be diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. At this moment, that means a lifetime of insulin injections or infusions to stay alive, plus regular painful finger pricks and careful blood glucose management.

“To cure, treat and prevent this disease, we are continually evaluating the Australian and global T1D research landscape and support the most promising programs."

In the past few years, research breakthroughs in JDRF’s mission to improve lives and defeat T1D included huge advances in beta cell replacement, new targets for complication treatments, and the first-ever therapy to delay the onset of T1D. They continue to move forward by supporting the most promising research projects to accelerate new treatments and technologies.
